I know many were dazzled (and/or damned annoyed) by the article and pics of Kim and Kanye in the latest VOGUE magazine. I, however, thought the most intersting thing in it was the article on Someone I had no previous knowledge of—Dorothy Thompson (9 July 1893 – 30 January 1961), preeminent journalist during the WWII era, archiving great notoriety for her early coverage of Hitler’s rise to power in Germany, and her scathing articles on him and the Nazi Party were some of the first pieces to educate Americans on what was occurring in Europe in the 1930s. In fact, she was the first American journalist to be kicked out of Germany due to her anti-Nazi rhetoric in the media. In addition to her newspaper articles and columns, she also was a popular radio broadcaster, hired by NBC for her insights. When Hitler invaded Poland in 1939, she went on the air for fifteen consecutive days and nights. By 1939, she was recognized by Time magazine as the second most influential woman in America next to Eleanor Roosevelt.

Thompson is often called the “First Lady of American Journalism.” She was an active and outspoken member of the National Women’s Party, and gave a speech in 1936 to a Washington DC crowd on women’s rights, to benefit the Equal Rights Amendment Fund. She also advocated for a change in fashion choices for professional women of a “certain size”—at a size 20 (in that era), she enlisted VOGUE to help her find clothing and designers that would serve her well going from the newsroom to a dinner or to a gala, ensembles that were stylish and not matronly, and reflected her straightforward manner yet love for life. She was a feminist in pre-feminist times, and while a few of her later political views went a bit wonky, her overall legacy is that of a trailblazer for women in the media.

Tonight, I’ll post a few of my favorite quotes of her’s I’ve found since reading the article.
